Suit Dreams

Overview

The 2010 Schott Foundation 50 state report on public education and black males revealed that the overall 2007/08 graduation rate for African-American male students nationwide was an alarming forty-seven percent.

For many young black men in brooklyn's urban areas, high school graduation is an unobtainable goal. young black men are dropping out of schools at staggering rates. poverty, violence and racial discrimination each play an integral role in determining the fates of these young men; each of these factors has the potential to rob these students of their potential to make it across their graduation stages.

Even before graduation, prom is a rite of passage for many high schoolers--a celebration of achievement and another form of entry into adulthood. Sadly, many of the African-American males at Cobble Hill High School have decided not to attend this year's prom, due to a lack of financial support and the incapacity to purchase tuxedos or suits for the occassion. following a brief conversation with the director of senior events at cobble hill high school, the determination was made that something must be done.

From these facts combined, suit dreams was conceived.

Suit dreams has determined not only to provide suits for (the) 32 (graduating seniors at cobble hill high school) to celebrate their monumental achievement, but further to provide a platform that will bridge the divide between some of new york's rising scholars and leading young professionals. the scholars/mentees will be taught, with the assistance of Career Gear, the importance of business etiquette, resume and career building. each suit donated will contain the business card of one of new york's premier young professionals, hence, matching the younger scholars with mentors who will foster their growth and development throughout their college careers and beyond.

In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday earlier this week, we’re spotlighting Suit Dreams, an organization that provides youth mentorships and suits for young African American adults.

“We encourage all of our young men to take pride in their appearances. When our young men put on their business attire, they feel empowered and confident,” explained founder Jerrell Horton.

Dear Mr. Horton,

On behalf of the staff, scholars and families at Mott Hall Bridges Academy I would like

to thank you for your very generous donation to our school. We hope you will send our

sincere thanks to the many others who contributed to the event and gave donations.

The generous amount of school supplies sent a buzz through our school community,

making us grateful to your organization and the hard work your team put in to help our

school.

Your contributions assisted families who may have been in need of school supplies and

provided our school community , a chance to see how the one organization can really

impact us. We know serving the youth is not always an easy task, so we wanted you to

know that we value the partnership with Suit Dreams and look forward to hearing

about other great events and programs you will be offering.

Here’s to the start of a great season and as our motto says let us continue to stay

“connected to succeed”.

Best Regards,

Nadia L. Lopez
